Best Mediterranean Diet

February 16, 2011
Low in Saturated Fat
Physicians and nutritionists the world over all agree that a diet that is high in saturated fat can have very negative consequences on a person’s health and wellbeing. Indeed, a diet that is high in saturated fat can cause a person to suffer heart disease, can lead to cancer and can cause a whole host of other health problems and concern.

The Mediterranean diet is noteworthy because of the fact that it is very low in saturated fat. The typical person who follows the Mediterranean diet intakes less than eight percent of his or her calories from potentially harmful saturated fat. This is significantly below the average of people who do not follow a Mediterranean diet regimen.

Includes Plentiful Amounts of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Another reason why the Mediterranean diet is good for you lies in the fact that the diet includes the consumption of a significant amount of fruit and vegetables. Indeed, the diet encompasses more fresh fruits and vegetables than any other dietary program or plan today.

Fresh fruits and vegetables have a significant beneficial effect on a person’s health and wellbeing. People who following the Mediterranean diet and consume generous servings of fruits and vegetables each day have a lower incidence of certain diseases including cancer and cardiovascular ailments.

High in Whole Grains and Fiber
A benefit in the Mediterranean diet is found in the fact that it lowers in the incidence of certain types of cancer. One of the reasons that the Mediterranean diet lowers the incidence of cancer is found in the fact that the diet is rich in whole grains and dietary fiber. Both whole grain and fiber have proven to lower the incidence of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

High in Anti-Oxidants
The Mediterranean diet is high in anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants play a significant role in maintaining the body -- including organs, muscles and skin -- in top condition. A diet high in anti-oxidants is believed to ensure that a person will live a longer, healthier life.

Low in Red Meat
Because the Mediterranean diet is low in red meat, the diet plan works to reduce the amount of “bad cholesterol.” A diet low in “bad cholesterol” lessens the incidence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke.

High in Lean Meats
The Mediterranean diet includes lean meats in moderate portions. The reasonable amount of lean meats -- including fish and certain seafood and fish -- provides a health source of protein and energy for a person.

Low in Dairy
The Mediterranean diet is low in dairy products. In fact, a true adherent to the Mediterranean diet includes almost no dairy products at all. Any dairy that is included in the diet is low fat or non fat. Because the diet is low in dairy, particularly fatty dairy products, the diet encourages a person to obtain or maintain an ideal weight. Additionally, the diet aids in reducing cholesterol and works to prevent heart disease.

Prevents Disease
As mentioned, one of the reasons that the Mediterranean diet is good for you rests in the fact that the diet plan appears to reduce the incidence of certain diseases including:
-- heart and cardiovascular disease
-- cancer
-- diabetes
-- hypertension
-- diabetes

Longevity
The history of the people of the Mediterranean region demonstrates that the Mediterranean diet works to extend a person’s life. In addition, while working to extend a person’s life, this diet scheme works to ensure that a person’s longer life will be healthy as well.

A Convenient Diet Program
Finally, the Mediterranean diet is good for you because it is a convenience diet program. In order to follow the Mediterranean diet you do not need to buy any special products or prepare a unique and hard to manage diet plan. If used with moderate exercise, it is a great way to lose weight while remaining healthy.

Breastfeeding Way

February 13, 2011

Some people may think that breastfeeding is an innate ability of mother and child. This is partially true in that the first instinct a baby has is to suck. However, most of breastfeeding is an acquired skill that takes a little practice. It’s important to not become discouraged, especially in those first few weeks. Learning the proper technique will ensure you get the least amount of discomfort and the most amount of joy out of breastfeeding. The two key parts to proper breastfeeding are positioning and latch-on techniques.

Having the correct position for both you and your baby will ensure the most comfort. First, position yourself as comfortably as possible. Remember, if you’re relaxed your milk flow will be much better. Sit up in bed on in a comfy chair, and get several pillows for support. Put one on your back, one in your lap, and one under the arm that will support your baby. Nursing pillows like the Boppy are very helpful. If you’re sitting in a chair, use a footstool to prop up your feet. For baby, start with him being lightly dressed or undressed. This will keep him from completely falling asleep so he can finish feeding. Position your baby’s neck on the fold in your arm let your forearm support his back and your hand his butt. Bring baby onto his side where he faces you tummy to tummy. Next, raise baby to breast level with a pillow and tuck away any little hands or arms. Now, wrap baby around you, and you’re ready for latching on.

The next essential part to successful breastfeeding is the proper latch-on techniques. Before you begin, express a little milk or colostrum and present your breast to baby. As soon as your baby opens his mouth wide bring him onto your breast. Make sure he takes in a lot of your areola, not just the nipple. This will greatly reduce any nipple pain. If baby’s lips aren’t everted (turned out), use your index finger to gently open the lips. Finally, support the weight of your breast so as to not tire out your little one.

Your spouse can take an active role while breastfeeding. I know as a father, I wanted to help my wife share the burden and joys as much as I could. I knew my wife was making the best decision for our baby. A spouse can be a strong support during this time. The spouse can help by rubbing Mom’s feet and shoulders to aid in relaxation. They can bring the baby to Mom during the night, so she doesn’t have to get out of bed. They can even help during the first few days buy helping baby latch on. Breastfeeding can be challenging, but is incredibly rewarding.

Get Out Depression

February 12, 2011
Family – It can be very vexing to loved one’s when you are depressed. On one hand they want nothing but the best for you, but on the other they sometimes get frustrated and wonder why you can’t simply snap out of it. It can be particularly hard on children of someone with depression as it may affect their outlook on life for many years to come. Having experienced this myself, I can say definitely this the number one reason to fight your depression.

Work - Work life generally suffers when in the throws of depression. It is more difficult to concentrate and not as easy to create and maintain good professional working relationships and partnerships. Furthermore, it makes being a “Self-starter” more unlikely. Rather than moving forward, maintaining the status-quo becomes more acceptable, even if only unconsciously.

Love – The love life of a person with depression can suffer tremendously. Regardless of How much someone may profess their dedication to another person, if the other person can never see the bright side, it can wear on them. Life is short, right? Love conquers A WHOLE LOT, but it doesn’t conquer everything. Sometimes we must add internal fortitude to love to truly be invincible. Besides isn’t it better to fight, not just for you, but for this person that you love as well?

Health – University studies have proven that people who are depressed are more likely to get sick, and more likely to die of an illness than those who are content. It is in your benefit, health wise, to fight your depression as well. A recent New York Times article, citing a University study, indicated that persons who have been diagnosed as depressed have more hospital visits, and a shorter lifespan.

Prosperity – The depressed person sometimes lacks clarity of thought, and may miss golden opportunities to improve their lives if only they had been paying attention. This may be, perhaps, the most important point, since many people believe they would be happier if only this part of their life, or that part of their life, etc was different. Allowing good things to happen in your life might just give you the jump start needed to end the cycle of depression and self imposed-isolation( even if only figuratively ).

Fighting depression can help your life in many ways. In some ways, the fight in itself is also a reward. You become stronger, do better at work, have better relationships, and can focus on what is really important in life so that you can improve it, for yourself, your family, friends, and loved ones.

Abortion

October 18, 2010
One of today’s most controversial topics, the abortion debate pits the rights of a mother against the rights of a fetus. The most common, clear-cut stances on the issue are “pro-choice” and “pro-life,” which hinge on legal and moral considerations. Another common viewpoint is a more blended pragmatist view, which states that abortion should be prohibited except for specific cases.

"Pro-choice" advocates stress a woman's right to choose whether and when to terminate her pregnancy. In their view, a woman should have absolute control over her own body and, by extension, over the survival of the fetus within her. The "pro-life" camp argues that life begins at conception and any termination of pregnancy after the formation of the embryo is equivalent to murder.

One may deem abortion immoral, but does that necessarily mean it should be illegal? As with many moral debates, there is an underlying and perhaps more significant legal debate raging, especially in the United States. Roe v. Wade was a landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that is still relevant today. The Court voted 7-2 to overturn all state laws banning abortion. The Justices concluded that such laws violate a woman's constitutional right to privacy. Since then, the moral debate has taken on political significance.

Alternatively, if abortion is morally permissible, does that mean it should be legal in all cases? In response to this question, there exist other viewpoints in addition to the clear cut “pro choice” and “pro life” positions. Indeed, proponents of each argument vary by degree.

For example, some pro-choice advocates believe abortion is no longer morally permissible after the second trimester. Similarly, some pro-lifers allow abortion in extreme cases, such as rape or incest. Roughly two percent of pregnancies occur under these conditions.

The abortion debate lends itself to a larger, overriding question: when must the government intervene in citizens' personal lives, and when must it avoid doing so?

Early Pregnancy Signs and Symtomps

September 19, 2010
Here are the earliest of the very early pregnancy signs:

• Missed Period - missing a menstrual period is an obvious very early pregnancy symptom. However, many women have missed periods for other reasons and conditions. These reasons include illness, stress, hormone imbalance, adverse reactions to foods and ingestion of substances that result in some level of adverse reaction. For a missed period to be one of the very early symptoms of pregnancy, it should be confirmed by other means.

• Morning Sickness - a feeling of nausea in the mornings can be another of the very early symptoms of pregnancy. But this very early pregnancy sign needs to be experienced for several days to be considered reliable. And nausea can have other causes that are not pregnancy related.

• Tender and Enlarged Breasts - very early in pregnancy, the body begins making a series of changes in the normal hormone levels. However, the body is unprepared for these changes when they first occur. There are several changes that will happen in the body in reaction to new hormone levels. One of the most noticable changes occur in the shape of and feelings of tenderness in the breasts. The good news is that these feelings of tenderness go away fairly quickly as the body becomes accustomed to the new hormone chemistry.

• Frequent Trips to the Bathroom - having to urinate more often is one of the very early pregnancy signs. Many women experience more frequent urination even before a missed period. The reason, as with tender and enlarged breasts, is a change in hormone levels produced by implantation of the embryo. A hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced, which has the side effect of causing more frequent urination. This is another of the very early symptoms of pregnancy which can be mistaken for some other condition, or as a reaction to the consumption of various foods or other substances. Pregnancy needs to be confirmed by the results of a pregnancy test.

• Fatigue - the lack of energy as one of the very early pregnancy signs is sometimes hard to distinguish from other kinds of exhaustion. Again, health professionals attribute this fatigue to the change in hormones in the body, which usually disappears as the body adjusts to the new hormone levels.

These are the most common very early pregnancy signs that most women agree on. Some women will experience only one of these signs, and some will have several or all of these very early symptoms of pregnancy. Once the very early pregnancy signs are experienced, confirm pregnancy by using one of the better home pregnancy tests (there are major differences in the reliability of the home tests for pregnancy). And the health of the baby begins with the mothers health and habits before conception as well as during pregnancy. Becoming pregnant and enjoying a successful pregnancy is a complex but wonderful experience. Learn as much as you can about fertility, pregnancy and your health so the brand new person will have the very best beginning to life that is possible.

Tips To Reduce Menstrual Cramps

Also known as dysmenorrhea, menstrual cramps are the cause of an estimated 140 million hours of lost school and work. However, you do not have to live in pain. Below are some helpful tips that can help women during this particularly painful time of the month.

1. Try to eat smaller, more frequent meals. A lot of food causes blood sugar to rise and fluctuate. instead of eating three large meals, eat five or six small meals a day, each about two and a half hours apart.

2. Exercise. Exercise can help alleviate menstrual cramps by raising the level of beta-endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain associated with pain relief. Studies have shown that beta endorphins have a positive effect on mood and behavior.

3. Try an over the counter Ibuprofen. Advil, Nuprin, and Motrin IB all contain Ibuprofen, which is one of the best pain relievers around. 200 milligrams every four to six hours is the recommended dosage, or twice that if symptoms warrant.

4. Oral contraceptive pills: Have been found to decrease the amount of menstrual tissue formed and lower the pain level (amplitude) of the uterine contractions.

5. Mefenamic acid: Also found over the counter, effectively relieves severe menstrual pain while also reducing heavy menstrual bleeding, easing menstrual migraine, and easing the
physical and emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

6. Reduce salt intake: To prevent water retention that causes bloating. Also, avoid liquor and other alcoholic beverages to reduce headaches.

7. Learn to relax. Rest, sleep and relaxation exercises can help reduce the pain and discomfort of menstrual cramps. A relaxing massage or bath with oil made with chamomile, lavender, marjoram, ginger and/or clary sage. They are aromatic and can aid in relaxation.

Never surrender to pain. There are steps you can take to help alleviate the pain and discomfort. So, the next time you experience any painful menstruation symptoms, be sure to try these tips.

Heartburn and Coffee

August 26, 2010
Doctors have always detected a connection between heartburn and coffee. It has almost become a part of common wisdom that coffee, wonderful drink that it is, is one of the main causes behind heartburn. One out of five coffee drinkers in the US suffers from heartburn. They have been advised by their doctor to cut their caffeine intake. It's a deplorable situation where they love Justify Fulltheir coffee, but are not loved in return.

So are you doomed to a caffeine-less existence for the rest of your days? Are heartburn and coffee so eternally linked together that there is no hope at all for coffee aficionados?Must they necessarily suffer heartburn or give up the drink they hold so close to their hearts?
The good news is, heartburn and coffee need not be as irrevocably bound together as much today as they once were. There is now a process for making coffee harmless in this respect. The last major innovation in coffee processing technology was in the 1930-s, when decaf or decaffeinated coffee was invented. And now, for the first time since then, there is a new technology for making coffee that does not cause heartburn.

What links heartburn and coffee? The contents of the human stomach are naturally acidic, so that is normal. You don't really feel that acidity as long as things are in control. And that acidity is actually necessary for the proper digestion of food. It is when that acidity grows to abnormal levels and rises from the stomach into the food pipe, that you experience heartburn.

There are many substances that may cause this excess of acidity by irritating the stomach. And among the many kinds of stomach irritants, caffeine is one of the most potent. It stimulates the stomach into producing more acid than normal. This is what connects heartburn and coffee. And this is why doctors advise against coffee for chronic patients of acid indigestion.

Now, there are new techniques for making coffee less irritating for the stomach. As a result, the connection between heartburn and coffee is not necessary any more. The Hevla technology, for example, employs a patented process that involves a high pressure steaming of the beans. Removing the irritating substances from coffee has not really been the challenge all this time. Rather, it has been removing them while retaining the taste and the flavor - things that make coffee interesting.

This is exactly what the new techniques have achieved. The best Arabica beans are chosen for Hevla-processed coffee, and the roasting goes on as usual. Roasting creates the flavour, but unfortunately also gives rise to the substances that connect heartburn and coffee. The Hevla high pressure steaming method is able to remove these substances without compromising on the taste and flavor.

So if you are one of those people who are thinking of giving up on coffee because of heartburn, despair no more. The link between heartburn and coffee has been broken. Go ahead and try the new product, and savor your favorite drink without suffering for it.

Hepatitis C and Coffee

Many Hepatitis C patients experience extreme fatigue throughout the course of the disease. And many people in this world are addicted to caffeine. Therefore, most scientists are now telling doctors not to remove their patients from caffeine as is found in coffee. This addiction is relatively harmless in the eyes of most doctors. However, there is increasing evidence that trying to end this addiction "cold turkey", as has been recommended by most doctors for patients who have been afflicted with Hepatitis C, is harmful to a patient's blood pressure and overall health.

Instead, coffee should be limited to between two and four cups a day, consumed early in the morning. Most doctors believe that you should have no more than 600mg of caffeine each day, so the number of actual cups of coffee depends on the type of coffee you prefer to drink. The freshness of the coffee beans and the strength of the particular brew can also affect the amount of caffeine in the coffee.

In addition, many doctors feel that cutting caffeine from hepatitis c patients cold turkey can be extremely time-consuming. These patients can be so concerned with avoiding the caffeine that they don't concentrate as much on other, more harmful lifestyle issues. These issues, including smoking, doing illegal drugs, and drinking alcohol, should be ceased immediately and require more attention from the patient than the relatively harmless caffeine.

For most people, drinking coffee helps to keep them alert and awake. Many Hepatitis C patients experience extreme fatigue throughout the course of the disease. Some doctors are therefore recommending that their hepatitis c patients drink coffee in order to counteract this fatigue without the use of medications that can become harmfully addictive.

Recently, though, researchers have begun questioning the need to cease caffeine intake at all in Hepatitis C patients. In fact, studies are beginning to show that the caffeine found in coffee is actually beneficial to these patients. In Hepatitis C, high levels of the serum Alanine Aminotransferase can cause significant liver damage. Recent studies have shown that caffeine found in coffee is reducing the levels of this serum found in patients.

One such study was done by researchers at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. This large study showed that the risk of elevated serum levels decreased with each additional cup of coffee. Drinking at least two cups of coffee daily had the highest level of benefit. However, if patients drank no coffee or only decaffeinated coffee, they did not achieve the same results.

Why it is proving that coffee and caffeine block the production of this serum is unknown at this time. However, it has been speculated that the caffeine blocks a receptor found in both the brain and the liver. This may help the body become immune to some of the effects of Hepatitis C that cause the increase in this serum.

In conclusion, there is currently no scientific evidence that drinking coffee causes problems for people with C type Hepatitis. In fact, the possibility of drinking coffee in moderation being helpful for such patients seems to be increasing.

Otitis Media

August 16, 2010
In simple terms, otitis media is an ear infection. It is inflammation of the inner ear, often caused by moisture which gets collected in the ear or by minor injury to the ear canal. The moisture often collects after swimming or bathing. Often allergies cause liquid to build up in the ear. Injuries often occur with hard impact with water or careless or intense use of cotton swabs. Discomfort, bacterial growth, or infection generally results.

Behind the eardrums is located the section of the ear called the middle ear, which houses a complex arrangement of tiny bones sensitive to sound waves. When sound waves pass over the middle ear, it transmits the sound to the inner ear.Nearby, the Eustachian tube connects the ear to the nose.

Otitis media may result from foreign matter breathed in through the nose, which irritates the Eustachian tube to the point of swelling and liquid from the ears can no longer drain through the nose and into the throat. In children, the Eustachian tube is shorter and less slanted, allowing bacteria to more easily arrive in the middle ear.

In trying to identify otitis media, it is helpful to be aware of the following symptoms:

Pus or fluid in the Eustachian tube or in the ear
Sensation of fullness in the ear
Pain in the ear
Inflammation in the ear
Fever
Hearing loss
Dizziness

Coughing and a runny nose are often associated with upper respiratory infections and should be monitored. Otitis media is most commonly found in children, persons with allergies, and persons with medical conditions such as a cleft palate.

Children are by far the leading demographic of individuals affected by otitis media. Research shows otitis media to rank second to the common cold as the most common health problem among preschoolers. The fact that at least 50% of all children have at least one episode of otitis media before the age of one is startling at the very least. But before the age three, 35% of children will have had repeat episodes. And after three-years old, an estimated 5 million school days are missed each year due to otitis media.

Prevention is easy. Most of us remember to wash our hands frequently to avoid picking up bacteria from what we touch. However, most of us fail to remember to wash or flush out our nasal passages at least every now and then to avoid harboring bacteria from what we breathe.

Look for xylitol as leading ingredient as you are searching for nasal rinse or spray. Xylitol naturally keeps bacteria from settling on the membranes of the nose, the throat, and the Eustachian tube. Flushing with a nasal wash with xylitol, is a simple yet important solution to a flourishing health epidemic.

Detoxify Your Body

August 15, 2010
A body that is overloaded with toxins cannot perform its normal cleansing job that is required for optimal health. In addition to naturally-occuring toxins, it is estimated that more than 400 man-made chemicals as well as heavy metals permeate the body of a person today. Naturally if these toxins are not removed from the body, they can cause chronic health ailments. It is therefore very necessary to detox and cleanse the body from these toxins and pollutants.

One way that is gaining much popularity as a convenient method to detox is the detox foot patch. The foot patch is simply a patch satchet filled with some natural plant-based ingredients that is applied on the soles of the feet.It has been widely touted as a simple and reasonably effective way to remove waste, toxins, microscopic parasites, heavy metals, chemicals and even cellulite (as some manufacturers claim).

Why detoxify through the foot? According to Chinese Traditional Medicine, our human body has over 360 acupuncture points, with more than 60 acupuncture points found on the soles of the foot. Known as the "second heart", they reflect the zones of our major internal organs. These zones also indicate potential homes for toxins.

Circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids reach their furthest points in the soles of the feet before being 'pumped' back up into the higher areas of the body.
By applying the patch to the foot, the patch extracts toxins from the body through the blood that circulates in the soles. After putting on the patch for a couple of hours, it turns dark black, with a pungent smell. Changes in the smell and color of the sachet indicate the amount and degree of toxins which have been extracted via the patch.

For a thorough and complete body cleanse, it is still better to go through a proper detox program. But for those who find it difficult to take the time off to detox and cleanse, the detox foot patch is a convenient and safe option to consider. Simply apply the patch to the soles of your foot overnight and look at your results in the morning!

To Be Healthier is not only for Ramadan

1 Have a lie down
Back pain can be avoided and the damage repaired with one easy exercise, which is lie down on the floor with your knees bent, hip width apart, feet on the floor. Do this daily for about five to fifteen minutes to release and lengthen your spine.

2 Note your nibbles
Crash diets don't work for long enough; instead maintain a food dairy to note your daily eating habits. With this you'll be conscious of what you eat, and make healthier choices.

3 10 deep breaths
Our breath power our lymphatic system, which removes waste from cells. By taking 10 deep breaths, three times a day, you'll clear more toxins and boost your thinking power by getting 20% more oxygen to your brain.

4 Put your fork down
Put your fork down between every mouthful of food, it makes you chew your food properly, preventing digestive problems, and also prevents you from over- eating.

5 Make a list
The most effective stress buster is to make a list.Your short term memory can only remember, on an average, seven things. So when you overload it , your stress level escalate. Making a list clears out all the stress from your brain you feel tension free. This saves you from headaches, depression and high blood pressure.

6 Massage your feet
Poor circulation could be robbing you of much needed sleep. Your temperature needs to drop slightly before you fall asleep, so your body dispels heat via your face, hands and feet. But many women have poor circulation, which constricts the blood vessels in their hands and feet and prevents them from dispelling heat. A hot bath before sleeping or a hand and foot massage will increase your circulation.

7 An organic apple a day
If you buy one organic item a day, make it an apple. Research found that pesticide residues in 71% of apples- the highest in fruits and vegetables.

8 Change your tea bag
When it comes to tea white is the new green. White tea comes from the same plant as green and black but is harvested earlier and undergoes less processing, which means it contains more cancer fighting anti- oxidants.

9 Eat dried apricots
The most common nutritional deficiency is iron. Tiredness, irritability and lack of concentration. Prevent it by having two helpings of lean red meat a week, or three dried apricots a day.

10 Stop skipping meals
Eating three meals a day is very important for a healthy body. It's the simplest way to balance blood sugar levels, which will keep your mood, energy and concentration balanced and strengthen your stress tolerance.

11 Keep it crunchy
Include some raw vegetables in every meal. Many of the vitamins and minerals are in vegetables are lost through cooking, so raw food is as good as it gets.

12 Focus on your feeling
Take two minutes to boost your resolve to do walk, jog or aerobics class. The instant gratification of that exercise high is far more motivating than the promise of thinner thighs two months down the line.

Facts about Eye Surgery

Eye Surgery has become a mainstream method of vision correction, and this article will explain the advantages and disadvantages of three different methods being offered to the medical consumer.

Lasik Eye Surgery
LASIK is the acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is an eye surgical system which permanently corrects vision by removing a thin layer of the cornea. This procedure works best on patients with moderate to high degrees of myopia (nearsightedness), low to moderate degrees of hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism associated with myopia, and who have thick corneas. It is the most well-known surgical vision correction method.
People with normal eye sight see objects clearly because images are brought into a correct focal point by the cornea and lens of the eye.Ideally, the cornea's curvature is evenly matched to its length in a normal eye. People with astigmatism, myopia or hyperopia have irregularly shaped corneas, so the objects seen are not focused properly. LASIK changes corneal shape by precise removal of corneal tissue, and by doing so corrects the eyes' focusing power.

There are, however, risks to LASIK eye surgery.
There is a remote chance of complete loss of vision. If this happens, it is usually because the patient had a pre-existing condition which should have precluded the surgery in the first place, such as pregnancy, cataracts, arthritis, diabetes, glaucoma, or lupus. People with large pupils are also poor candidates for LASIK. Dry eye syndrome will be aggravated by this procedure.
A few patients complain that they permanently see "ghost" images, have blurred vision, diminished contrast and bad night vision. When LASIK was first introduced, 5% of patients had post-operative complaints; however, refinements in the procedure have caused this rate to drop to less than 1% if LASIK is performed by skilled practitioners and patients are properly screened prior to surgery. If problems do occur, they can often be resoved by a retreatment.
FDA has approved LASIK laser eye surgery since 1998. While there are a lot of satisfied patients, there are however no long term studies about its effects. Realize the limitations and the risks of LASIK eye surgery before you sigh up for the procedure.

Intacs
Though less well known, these small implants can improve vision in patients with mild to moderate myopia without the risk of permanent eye damage inherent in the tissue removal technique of LASIK. Intacs are semi-circular disks implanted in the cornea which stretch it to assume a flatter shape. Though slightly less precise than LASIK, they are removeable and replaceable, so if the patient has an unexpected over- or under-correction, the implant can be removed and another of a different size inserted to obtain the desired correction. The implants are located at the edge of the cornea, so the central visual area is completely intact and undamaged, and the strength of the cornea is undiminished, making it a better option for pilots and those who engage in contact sports where eye injury is a possibility.

Intacs are unsuitable for severe myopia and more than minor astigmatism (1.00 diopters), as the cornea can only be stretched so far. If the Intacs are removed, vision returns to its preoperative level. Aside from vision correction, Intacs are also used to treat keratoconus.
Intacs are FDA approved and 10 year studies have revealed no major problems with Intacs and very few patient complaints; however, because the procedure takes more training than LASIK, there are fewer eye surgery clinics offering it. However, the Intacs website gives a list of practitioners in each state, as well a few in Canada, Europe and Mexico.

Implants
Because many people do not want to risk LASIK and Intacs cannot help those with severe vision problems, intraocular lens implants (IOL) are a new option approved by the FDA in 2004 to correct moderate to severe nearsightedness. The Artisan lens, manufactured by Ophtec, is similar to the type of lens implant utilized to restore vision following cataract eye surgery.
The new IOL, called the Artisan, is intended for only patients who have 2.5 diopters or less of astigmatism.

The artificial lens does not replace the natural lens, but is inserted in front of it. The main problem found with the implant was the steady loss of endothelial cells in the corneas of patients who received the implants. The endothelium is a layer of cells that line the undersurface of the cornea and are essential in keeping the cornea clear. A three-year study showed a continual steady loss of endothelial cells of 1.8 percent a year. At this point, no one can predict whether this loss will proceed at the same rate indefinitely, or even its impact on corneal function.
To minimize long-term effects of the device on the corneal endothelium, the FDA is requiring that the new lenses be labelled to specify that they should only be implanted in patients whose corneal endothelial cells are thick enough to withstand minor cell loss.

More serious complications were few: retinal detachment (0.6%), cataract development (0.6%), and corneal swelling (0.4%). The FDA is requiring Ophtec to conduct a five-year follow-up survey of its implant patients to better assess the post-surgical incidence of cataract development, retinal detachment and other ophthalmic diseases.
The Artisan lens is intended to be a permanent implant.Though it can be removed surgically, vision may not always return to what it was prior to getting the lens. Because it does not affect astigmatism, patients with this problem might still require glasses.

Overweight Five Habits

Unfortunately for most of us, our healthy lifestyle education comes in the form of a blaring commercial that is trying to convince us that eating this "lite" food or using that "miracle exercise machine" will lead to a healthy, fun, lean lifestyle! A healthy, lean lifestyle takes effort and education. Hopefully these five steps will get you started on a path to meet your weight loss goals.

* Skipping meals and then overeating when you make time to eat. Skipping meals leads to blood sugar fluctuations, moodiness, and can even lead to overeating. Eat healthy meals and snacks at regular intervals.
* Not moving your body. The body is designed to move. Period. Exercise can brighten your mood and lighten your body.
* Drinking cola or sugar drinks when you are thirsty. When your body is thirsty it is asking for water.
* Snacking on empty calories. Being fat free or low carb does not make it healthy. Empty calories (calories void of nutritional value) do nothing for your body.
* Watching an abundance of TV. A recent article stated that you use less energy while watching TV than while sitting still!

Most of us do these habits and are totally unaware of how unhealthy and destructive they can be. Of course this article is not telling you to never watch TV, or never snack - it is merely trying to raise your level of awareness of some things you may be doing that may be sabotaging your diet efforts. Observe your habits and ask yourself if they are contributing to a healthy lifestyle and an ideal weight or are they contributing to an unhealthy lifestyle and being overweight. Arm yourself with knowledge and achieve your ideal weight.

Best Acne Treatment

Acne is, perhaps, the single treated skin disorder and has been addressed in a wide variety of ways. Often the wisest step is to develop a program in consultation with a dermatologist or medical practitioner. Even with help, there may be a trial-and-error process in finding the right solution. There are also some solutions advised by alternative medicine practitioners of various sorts and we will also touch on them.

Some mild washing of the face may be useful. But vigorous and frequent washing is discouraged by dermatologists. Topical creams may be helpful but overuse can lead to side effects and problems. One popular home treatment is salicylic acid, found in face washes and medicated facial pads. It curtails the hair follicles from shedding excess skin, which leads to the clogging of pores.Another home treatment is benzoyl peroxide, found in certain soap and face wash products, but also in topical creams. It can produce excessive drying and redness- so it is often recommended that one begin by trying it once a day and, then, if that works, try it twice. Results should be apparent after a few weeks.

In the world of orthodox medicine, there are various types of prescription medications and face washes. If you go to your local drugstore or supermarket, you can find lots of different products whose objective is to treat acne. None of these products produce instantaneous results and one part of a sensible prescription for treatment is patience. Since some of these products may have side effects, you should know their contents and possible effects. Over-use of the wrong product can actually exaggerate the condition.

Experts generally think that acne is caused when an excess of oil, secreted by tiny glands surrounding the hair follicles combine with dead skins to clog the pores of the skin. Bacteria, chiefly Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes develops in these pore pockets which leads to the blackheads, white heads and more common pimples that we associate with this unpleasant form.
Some of the prescription topical solutions include antibiotics. Antibiotics, along with azelaic acid can impede the development of the bacteria, reducing the ugly inflammation that characterizes acne.

Comedones, which are the compromised hair follicles, plugged with dead cells and sebum, that cause blackheads, which penetrate the surface of the skin, and whiteheads, which operate at semi-surface levels. They can actually be treated by retinoids, which are Vitamin-A like biochemical formulations, which actually help to unplug comedones, paving the way for topicals, including antibiotics, to enter into the follicles and do their damage. Dermatologists sometimes use the newer retinoids to curtail further comedone development.

In the case of severer forms of acne, dermatologists may prescribe the less physically invasive route of oral medicine. Some common antibiotics, used to curb the development of the P. acnes bacteria and reduce inflammation are doxycycline, tetracycline and minocyclyine. The common topical, benzoyl peroxide, may be used with antibiotics such as sulfur, erythromycin or clindamycin. There can be disturbing side affects to antibiotics, depending on the drug and the individual's sensitivity. Changes in skin color, an increased propensity for sunburns, dizziness, stomach problems can occur. Tetracycline is contra- indicated in children and pregnant women. The antibiotic route must be taken with caution and with awareness of problems. Substances such as minocycline and tetracycline can even affect the potency of oral birth control methods.

In very serious cases of nodular or cystic acne that seems resistant to treatment, a dermatologist may prescribe isotretinoin or "Accutane," a retinoid that might be taken once or twice a day for up to twenty weeks. Oil glands actually can be shrunk by Accutane and there is a marked effect on the growth of bacteria. Its great advantage is that it can prevent scarring and markedly disappears the acne in something like 90 per cent of patients.

The downside of isotretinoin is that it can cause birth defects in an unborn child if it imbibed by a pregnant woman. So woman undergoing this treatment often have two take several forms of birth control to make sure they don't get pregnant while undergoing therapy.

Are there natural treatments for acne? Alternative medical practitioners recommend such substances as pantothenic acid, a B vitamin, said to combat stress, a factor that aggravates acne, grapeseed extracts and grapefruit seed extracts; various essential fatty acids like primrose or flax seed oil which can allegedly clear the pores of the skin, colloidal silver, said to be a powerful natural antibiotic; tea tree oil soap- whose main active constituent is tea tree oil, said to be made from a natural antibiotic.

Smoking and Eye Damage

The chemicals in cigarette smoke (around 4000 of them) get into the bloodstream of smokers and may induce the damage to the eye. The chemicals in tobacco smoke can cause inflammation of the conjunctiva (the thin membrane covering the eye), resulting in bloodshot, irritated eyes.

In a study of nearly 21,000 U.S. male physicians, spanning an average of 13.6 years, researchers found a direct link between smoking and the development of cataracts. The study, known as Physicians Health Study I, evaluated physicians between the ages of 40 and 84 who had no prior history of cataracts before 1982. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires that included information such as: number of cigarettes smoked daily, age when they started smoking, and their age if they stopped smoking. Each participant received annual eye exams and were required to report the results to the study investigators. The participants' ophthalmologists and optometrists confirmed the results.

Smoking has also been linked to eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. The causes of macular degeneration are not completely understood, but smoking is believed to be the main preventable risk factor. Evidence indicates that more than a quarter of all cases of AMD are linked to current or past exposure to smoking.
Study results appear mixed about a direct association between smoking and diabetic retinopathy, but most experts agree that smoking should be avoided to help help stop progression of the disease.

Smoking causes shrinkage or constriction of blood vessels, shown to be directly linked to rising inner eye pressure (intraocular pressure) that can lead to glaucoma and accompanying optic nerve damage.
Optic neuritis : A landmark study found a strong association between factors such as poor nutrition and smoking linked to a 1992-1993 epidemic of optic nerve damage among Cuban citizens.
Although smoking is associated with several eye diseases, including nuclear cataract and thyroid eye disease, the most common cause of smoking related blindness is age related macular degeneration, which results in severe irreversible loss of central vision.
How does smoking damage the eyes?
When you inhale cigarette smoke thousands of chemicals get into your bloodstream and can travel throughout your body. These chemicals cause damage to the macula (the most sensitive part of the retina, at the back of your eye). Tiny blood vessels can burst through the macula, leading to irreversible damage, or alternatively, the cells of the macula slowly die. Both ultimately lead to loss of vision.

Can this damage be reversed?
No. Laser treatment can sometimes kill the new blood vessels before they hit the macula. However, most people are not able to be helped this way because the blood vessel has already involved the very centre of the macula, and even after treatment, the condition recurs in half the cases and in almost all those who continue to smoke. A new treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT) may be able to help some to reduce the severity of vision loss, but the majority of people with macular degeneration will still not be able to be treated.

Yoga Types

Yoga is becoming a more and more popular activity in the Western world today. The number of places holding Yoga classes is on the increase and there is a plethora of different types of Yoga. With a choice of Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and many more it can be easy to get confused
The article will help you to understand the difference between the most popular types of Yoga so you can choose which type is right for you.

Hatha Yoga - in Sanskrit (an ancient classical language of India) Ha means sun and tha means moon. This type of Yoga is relatively slow paced, gentle type of Yoga and is a good place to start if you are completely new to Yoga and don't know any of the asanas (poses).Like all types of Yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unite the mind, body and spirit.

Ashtanga Yoga - this is the type of Yoga that I practice on a regular basis and means eight limbs in Sanskrit. It's a fast moving, intense style of Yoga practice and is based on a progressive set sequence of asanas, synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga Yoga can be quite physically demanding as you constantly move from one asana in the sequence to the next, so you'll find that it will improve your stamina as well as your flexibility and strength..

Power Yoga - this is a western interpretation of Yoga and is based on Ashtanga Yoga. A Power Yoga class may not necessarily stick to the exact sequence of poses like Ashtanga Yoga does, but it does involve practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting.

Iyengar Yoga - This type of Yoga is based on teachings by B.K.S Igengar and concentrates on the correct alignment and form of the body. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, there is an emphasis on holding each pose for a long period of time rather than moving constantly from one pose to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to help align the body into the different poses.
Vinyasa Yoga - Vinyasa means breath synchronized movement and is another fast paced type of Yoga, with an emphasis on breathing. A practice typically starts with sun salutations and moves on to more intense stretching. Throughout the practice each pose is balanced with a counter pose.

Bikram Yoga - otherwise known as Hot Yoga, is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees, with a humidity of around 40%. Generally a sequence of 26 different poses is practiced during a Bikram Yoga class and the hot temperature helps to loosen muscles. Due to the high temperature most people sweat a lot during the class and this helps to cleanse the body of toxins.
If you're just starting out or have never done any Yoga before, I recommend trying a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best.

Remember, there's no rule that says you have to stick to one type of Yoga. I like Ashtanga Yoga best, but I also go to occasional Iyengar and Hatha Yoga classes for a bit of variety.

Tension Headache, Fioricet and Butalbital

Millions of Americans suffer from Tension Headache. This article describes tension headaches, a variety of treatments, and advises patients who elect to take Fioricet or butalbital to treat their headache.

At our online pharmacy and many others, the most frequently prescribed medication is butalbital, the generic form of Fioricet. Patients are prescribed this medication for relief of tension headache. This article summarizes tension headache as well as butalbital to help patients make informed choices about their treatment.

Tension headache, also called “muscle contraction headache” or “stress headache” is a condition involving pain in the head, neck or scalp. It is typically a dull, achy feeling on both sides of the head, often associated with tightness of the muscles in the affected area.Tension headaches usually start in the middle of the day, typically building slowly and gradually. They can become quite severe, even more painful than a migraine headache. The pain may be worsened by noise or glare.

Tension headache is often the result of stress, anxiety or depression. It can also result from holding the head in a constant or awkward position for long times, for example when using a computer, typing or performing fine work using the hands. Other contributing factors may include excessive alcohol consumption, eyestrain, fatigue, excess caffeine, sinus infection and the flu.

Tension headache can be extremely uncomfortable and annoying, but is not dangerous. It is important to differentiate between tension headache and other conditions which result in head pain, however. If the pain is associated with vision changes, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, seizures or it does not respond to treatment, a physician should be consulted immediately.

While the mechanism behind tension headaches is not completely understood, there are a variety of treatments available with varying efficacy for patients. These include relaxation exercises, meditation, hot showers, biofeedback, a hot or cold pack placed on the point of pain, exercise and over the counter medication. Given the escalating nature of the headache, it is advisable to treat the pain as early as possible and prevent the pain from increasing in severity. For many patients, there is simply no substitute for Fioricet or butalbital. This medication is a combination of three ingredients (50 mg butalbital, 325 mg acetaminophen and 40 mg caffeine). For some reason, this combination of ingredients in this ratio of quantities is particularly effective in treating tension headache.

Butalbital is a barbiturate. It is responsible for relaxing the skeletal muscles in the head, neck and scalp. Acetaminophen is an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). Tylenol is acetaminophen. Caffeine is a central nervous stimulant found naturally in coffee. All the ingredients in Butalbital (Fioricet) are absorbed quickly. They are eliminated from the body in a variety of ways involving the liver and kidneys. It is interesting to note that while the caffeine and acetaminophen are eliminated from the body rather quickly (half of the drug is eliminated from the body in 3 hours), the butalbital component remains in the body much longer (half of the drug is eliminated in 35 hours).

While Fioricet and butalbital are safe medications, it is helpful to understand the precautions advised by the drug manufacturers when taking this medication. If you have a hypersensitivity to any of the components in butalbital, obviously you should consult a physician before taking the medication. Since the medication is cleared from the body by the kidneys and liver, any patient with impared liver or kidney function should consult a physician. The package insert for Fioricet also mentions that patients with porphyria should exercise the same caution, as should patients taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors.

Fioricet and butalbital have other warnings as well. The medication can give patients a feeling of intoxication and euphoria, and may be habit forming.
Butalbital is a central nervous system depressant. This attribute accounts for the relaxation of skeletal muscle associated with tension headache, but it also carries the same risk as other CNS depressants. You should avoid driving or operating machinery when using this medication, as it can impair your mental and/or physical abilities. Alcohol can greatly strengthen the CNS depressant capability of the medication- avoid combining alcohol and butalbital.
Adverse reactions to butalbital and Fioricet include: drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, sedation, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. As with any medication, there have been a wide range of other rare adverse reactions reported.

In conclusion, Fioricet and butalbital are safe medications which are effective treatment for tension headaches. An educated patient is a safe patient, so it is important to understand the information in this article. If you do not understand the information in this article, or if you fall into any of the advisory categories, it is best to consult a physician before beginning treatment.

10 Easy Weight Loss Tips

1. Stop Drinking Soft Drinks
Each soft drink is 150 empty calories. Replacing just one soft drink per day with water will result in losing 16 lbs per year.

2. Keep Yourself Busy
When there is nothing to do, we reach for the food out of boredom. Staying busy with other activities will help to keep your mind off food.

3. Get Rid Of Tempting Foods
We all have foods that we can't resist.Knowing that, it's best to not have those foods around the house. Out of sight, out of mind.

4. Watch Your Portions
How much you eat is just as important as what you eat. If an average person starts eating just 10% less, he will lose about 20 lbs per year without changing his diet.

5. Think Of Calories In Terms Of Exercise
You have to do the whole hour of aerobics to burn off the 500 calories contained in a big piece of cheesecake. What is easier for you: exercising for 1 hour or not eating the cheesecake?

6. Take A Pause
Next time when you are about to eat something you shouldn't, pause for a couple of seconds and ask yourself -"Is It Worth It?" If the answer is "Yes", go ahead and indulge. If the answer is "No", step back and congratulate yourself for taking that pause.

7. Eat Slowly
It takes our brain about 20 minutes to realize that we are full. When you eat too fast, there is not enough time for the "full" feeling to register, so you'd end up literally stuffing yourself with food.

Teeth Whitening

You see your boss and he compliments your efforts on the success of last week's presentation with a promotion. Your response? A half-smile. You see your crush down the corridors. She's smiling that come-hither smile. Your response? A sheepish grin. Surely, you don't want to give those two VIP's a wrong impression, right? But what is really bothering you that you can't smile that widest smile you should be flashing them? It's those far-from immaculate white teeth your mouth is "stuck" with.

Have you ever thought about teeth whitening? No? white teeth is not only for celebrities. Everybody deserves to smile that bright smile propped with white teeth. So, read on for more info on this long dream of yours - achieving a sunnier smile by teeth whitening.

Whiter teeth is not impossible, you only need the moolah and the drive to pursue this teeth whitening endeavor. Fortunately, there are three teeth whitening methods available for you to choose from. These three differ from each other in cost and effectiveness.

One way to accomplish teeth whitening is through the help of over the counter products that ensure a flashier smile. See, this is not so hard an activity. All you need is ask that trusty saleslady to give you those teeth whitening paraphernalia. This dental whitener kit consists of a mouthpiece, a bleaching agent and sometimes an applicator. This is a DIY method that could easily be done at the comforts of your home sweet home. This home teeth whitening is carried out through wearing the mouthpiece, filling it with the bleaching agent and wearing it overnight. Availing a fitted mouthpiece is often recommended since it produces better results. A formula that contains 15% to 16% of carbamide peroxide is said to be the safest and most effective concentration to achieve that sunny smile. But it is important to know that some teeth discolorations are more stubborn than other. So, results may really vary depending on the resistance of your teeth discoloration. This kind of teeth whitening method is the least expensive. Kits may be bought with a budget of under $50.

A recently presented procedure is laser teeth whitening. From being first developed by NASA scientists, it has become the favorite teeth whitening method of dentists. Why did it win the dentists' preference, you ask. Simply because it's lesser time-consuming, two hours will be enough for the treatment and no follow-up treatment is really that necessary. Dentists seek the help of a peroxide solution to breeze through this teeth whitening process. Then the whitening process will be accelerated with the use of laser. 93% is reported to be the satisfaction rate for this procedure. And this is more preferred by those who are not into the overnight-long wearing of the mouthpiece required by the home teeth whitening method. Its results even last the longest compared to other treatments. One major disadvantage of laser teeth whitening is its effect on one's pocket. A procedure like this could cost one to shell out about $1500. What a hefty price, right?

Another resort for whiter teeth is through the professional teeth whitening method. This is a system that requires dentists to create a mold of your teeth. From this mold, a mouth guard is produced to custom-fit your mouth. You will wear this mouth guard for some hours a day in a period of two weeks. A stronger concentration of carbamide peroxide will be used as a filler on your mouth guard. The setback of this system is its risk of teeth and gum sensitivity. But it is relatively lesser expensive than laser teeth whitening.

So, there you have it. Have you finally singled out the procedure that suits you. Make up your mind. Sooner or later, thanking your boss and sparking up a cheerful convo with your crush won't be that troublesome as it used to be. You'll be more confident with your whiter set of teeth.

How to Be Fit

July 10, 2010

Fitness refers to ability of the body to function with vigor and alertness. Nutrition refers to the nurturing of our body, in our ability to keep it healthy and functioning as it is supposed to do. Our ability to provide the body with all the necessary food, vitamins, and minerals so that we continue to thrive in our daily life processes.

But do we know if we are really fit? How do we tell?
First, you might want to look at your exercise habits, if there are any. If there aren’t any exercise routines to examine, no fitness. Everyone, no matter what their age, benefits from exercise. It keeps our bodies conditioned, our mental sharpness working at top speed, and thanks to the physical aspect, we get a boost to our cardio health, extra calorie burn, and more oxygen to those cells!

Do you take in more calories than your body needs? Are you supplementing your vitamins and minerals to make sure you are getting your recommended daily allowances? If you’re not making the most basic of efforts to take care of your nutritional needs, you aren’t a fit individual. You may not look sick, you may not have any noticeable symptoms of ill-health, but you’re not the fit and toned individual you could be.

What about the stress levels in your life? Do work in an environment with high levels of stress? Is your personal life a source of comfort or does it add to your stress levels? Do you engage in some form of stress-relieving activity? Stress is the number on contributor to heart attacks and strokes, since they manage to speed up the affect of the real culprits. Stress is basically an out of control situation for most adults today. We manage to schedule every moment of our free time, and leave ourselves with no time for quiet reflection, or time to deal with life’s unexpected emergencies.

Fitness requires us to examine more than just our exercise routine. The mere definition of fitness refers to the body’s ability to meet physical stresses. That includes coping with our day to day life, getting from the beginning of the day to the end, without being worn completely out. In order to be truly fit, we find ways to rid ourselves of built up stress, the kind that begins to affect our muscles, muscle tone, and composition. Massages are the best cure for ridding our bodies of the stress buildup that can occur, even with exercise regimens and detract from our overall fitness.

Exercises that demand total body involvement are the best for maintaining and improving your level of fitness most effectively. Running, swimming, jogging, dancing, cycling, and very brisk walking are some of the more popular total body involvement exercises.

There are so many occasions to stop and question our efforts at maintaining optimal health, that we usually don’t even take the time to begin the examination. But it is beneficial to our overall health, the quality and quantity of our life, to make every effort to be fit, healthy, individuals.
